Three men — one from Costa Mesa and the other two from Menifee — were killed when their plane crashed into the mountains near Lake Elsinore, according to a news report.

Jacob Griffiths, 32, of Costa Mesa, died in the crash along with his brother-in-law, Kyle Parton, 29, and his father-in-law, Doug Symiczek, both of Menifee.  Griffiths was the owner of Great Scott Tree Service in Stanton; his wife Amanda is pregnant with their first child, due in January.

Witnesses reported that the 1967 Piper PA28 piloted by Symiczek, an experienced pilot, made a sharp turn after takeoff, clipped some trees and crashed into the mountains.  According to the news report, family members said that preliminary reports indicate engine failure as the cause of the crash.  It is still under investigation by the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board.
