A Cypress doctor who came out of a five-year retirement to perform plastic surgery at an unaccredited outpatient center has agreed to 35 months of probation by the California Medical Board.

Dr. Lawrence Hansen performed a vaginal reconstruction surgery on Maria Garcia, 39, in March 2008 at Hills Surgical Institute in Anaheim Hills, which was unaccredited at that time.  According to medical board documents, Hansen had been retired from medical practice since 2003 prior to Garcia’s surgery.  The board alleged that Hansen failed to take a comprehensive medical history or conduct a thorough physical exam of Garcia prior to the surgery.  Garcia reportedly suffered bleeding during the surgery and, shortly thereafter, underwent a liposuction procedure performed by a different physician.

After her second surgery, Garcia suffered a heart attack and died.  Board documents allege Hansen was negligent for failing to verify the surgery center was accredited and for failing to check on his patient after learning of her complications.
