A six-year-old boy suffered second- and third-degree burns after falling into a Huntington City Beach fire pit while flying a kite, and his family is blaming the city for not properly maintaining the beach fire pits, according to a news report.

Seth Richardson of Hemet fell into a still-smoldering fire pit on Huntington City Beach and suffered burns to his arm and chest.  He is currently being treated at UCI’s Regional Burn Center in Orange.

His father, Jason Richardson, says his son did not see the fire pit because one side of the pit was missing, making it level with the sand.  He contends that the accident would not have happened if the fire pits were properly maintained.  Two lawsuits have been filed in recent years against the city and the state for poor maintenance of fire pits that led to injuries to a toddler and a teenager.
