A multi-vehicle car accident on the 405 Wednesday morning resulted in a fatality. The northbound side of the freeway in Costa Mesa near Harbor Boulevard became severely congested prior to and during the morning commute following the horrible crash.

The multi-vehicle car crash occurred at 4:45 a.m. when a minor crash was reported. This minor crash caused the airbags to deploy. A 42-year-old mother and her 18-year-old daughter then got out of the vehicle on the freeway, authorities said. Another oncoming vehicle hit their car and struck the mother, who died at the scene. This then led to a chain reaction of crashes.

A SigAlert was issued closing all northbound lanes. Three lanes were reopened about an hour afterward, the CHP reported.

While the locus of the crash involved at least four vehicles multiple other chain-reaction crashes and fender benders occurred in the area.
