At least 10 separate cars crashed along the I-5 in Southern California on Saturday led to a pileup that resulted in at least 16 people injured including a 22-month-old baby who was reported to be in critical condition. The crashes caused traffic delays for several hours along the Grapevine after its occurence at around 2:45 p.m..

Currently, reports of the number of vehicles involved in the pileup on the Grapevine vary from 20 vehicles involved to 50.

Among the vehicles involved was a Toyota truck which became engulfed in flames and a sedan which was left unrecognizable as a result of fire. The flames created a billowing cloud of black smoke above the wrecks on the highway.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that the baby was taken to Los Angeles Children’s Hospital where it was fighting for its life. The baby’s name has not yet been revealed.

Authorities initial investigations report that a thick fog which had formed at the time of the crash may have been a factor in the multi-vehicle crash. The CHP stated that the fog, along with drivers not turning on their headlights and speed may have contributed to the horrible series of accidents.

“The fog moved in quick and drivers did not address speed accordingly,” Sgt. Jeff Mesa of the CHP said in a statement to The Fresno Bee.
