An eleven-year-old Orange County boy was riding his bike to school when he was hit by a van and hospitalized with head injuries. The 1970 Volkswagen van struck him around 8:30 a.m. near Brookdale Lane and Sunridge Drive in Huntington Beach, California. The accident occurred just blocks from Isaac Sowers Middle School in a residential area.

The boy apparently crossed the street in front of the van while on his bike. Unverified sources say the accident occurred near an official crosswalk with a crossing guard. The boy was reportedly wearing a helmet, but was hospitalized with head injuries. He is currently listed in critical condition.

Police are still investigating the crash, but no citations were issued or arrests made at the time of the accident. Residents of the neighborhood say the streets are often congested during school drop-off times, and it is difficult to see pedestrians and bicyclists around parked cars. Residents also say Huntington Beach schools should provide mandatory bicycle safety lessons to its students because students often ride in an unpredictable and unsafe manner.
