Dodge City Museum to Remove Noose Attraction after Near-fatal Accident

A 69-year old tourist from Arkansas nearly hanged himself by accident while posing for a picture at the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City, Kansas. The man got more than he bargained for while trying to experience a “hanging tree” on the block-long replica of a Wild West street.

The man lost consciousness while standing with his neck in the noose for a photo op, though his feet reportedly stayed on the ground. Museum staff, two women who accompanied him, and an off duty police officer helped the tourist out of the noose. The man regained consciousness while still at the museum but was hospitalized due to his injuries.

Boot Hill Museum officials say they do not know how the noose got to be within reach of the man, whose name was not released. The noose is normally hung 15 feet in the air- too high to be a hazard or an attractive nuisance. In response to the accident, the Old West museum has removed the noose that has been on display for more than 60 years. They have not yet decided whether the exhibit will be put back in place. It depends on how the accident happened in the first place.
