After 4 months in the hospital, 13-year-old Teagan Marti is finally going home. She was severely injured when she fell 100 feet from the Terminal Velocity attraction at Extreme World in the Wisconsin Dells. Instead of landing safely in a safety net, the Florida teen hit the ground, injuring her back, neck and organs.

The ride is known as a suspended catch air device. Individual riders strap themselves into a harness and are lifted to the top of four ten-story towers. The rider is then unhooked from their harness and they fall backwards in a free fall. The rider is supposed to land in a net that is 40 feet off the ground. On July 30th when Teagan did her free fall, the safety net had not been raised, and she hit the ground instead.

Teagan was in a coma for a period of time and suffered multiple spinal fractures. A month after the accident, she couldn’t speak, sit up or eat on her own. She celebrated her 13th birthday in the hospital. Teagan has regained speech, but doctors don’t know if she will ever walk again, and she has a long recovery ahead of her. Her spinal cord was stretched, not severed, so there is hope she may regain mobility.

The ride operator has been charged with felony reckless injury, and Teagan’s family has reached an undisclosed financial settlement with Extreme World. The ride’s manufacturer, a German company, is out of business.
