Fuchs had been attending a benefit event on the seventh floor of the building. When he left the event, the elevator became stuck between the fourth and fifth floors. Another man riding in the elevator with Fuchs safely jumped to the fourth floor landing, but when Fuchs attempted to jump, his jacket caught on something inside the elevator and caused him to fall four and a half stories down the elevator shaft.
When friends rushed to his aid, Fuchs was conscious but unable to speak. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Bellevue Medical Center. The police do not suspect any criminality in the case. However, the faulty elevator could certainly be considered a factor in Fuchs’ death.
