Man Killed, Woman Injured in 55 Freeway Crash in Tustin

A man has been killed and a woman was seriously injured after both were struck by multiple vehicles on the 55 freeway in Tustin, according to a news report.

The California Highway Patrol said that the pedestrian accident happened on the northbound Costa Mesa Freeway just north of Warner Avenue. It began when a 2013 BMW X1 SUV stopped either on the right shoulder or in the slow lane and a 28-year-old Anaheim man got out of the vehicle. He was hit by a 2016 Dodge Dart driven by Jerry Yang, 22, of Sacramento.

The driver of the BMW X1, a 27-year-old Garden Grove woman, tried to reach the Anaheim man and she was hit by an Audi Q5 driven by Ryan McMillan, 33, of Irvine. She was taken to OC Global Hospital with major injuries.

Two other vehicles — an Audi A3 driven by a 52-year-old Newport Beach man and a 2005 Ford F150 pick up driven by an Orange man — crashed at the scene and ended up on top of the Anaheim man. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A female passenger in the BMW X1 was also hit by a BMW 328i at the crash scene and was hospitalized with minor injuries. Another passenger from the BMW X1 also had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

As the CHP was working the accident, another crash occurred after a car hit the back of a U.S. Postal Service big rig. A 26-year-old Tustin man and a 25-year-old Corona woman in the car were hospitalized with injuries. The USPS big rig driver, 45-year-old Phillip Robeniol Blas of Artesia, also had minor injuries.
