MGM Resorts International made headlines in July for suing hundreds of victims of the Las Vegas mass shooting that happened from a room in the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in October of 2017. Now MGM has offered victims $500 in charitable donations for each person who accepts legal notice of the company’s lawsuit – a move designed to allow the case to move to federal court.
Debra DeShong, senior vice president of global corporate communications for MGM Resorts explained the move stating that, “We believe that donating funds to a 1 October charity or another appropriate cause makes more sense than spending money on personally serving individual [defendants].”
The defendants are all people who were victims of the shooting and who have threatened lawsuits against MGM.
The case which MGM is looking to usher into federal court seeks to dismiss existing lawsuits against itself based on the argument that MGM can not be held liable for the actions of the shooter. MGM is not seeking any financial damages.
