Motorcyclist and pedestrian killed in Fullerton Crash Causing Gas Leak

A motorcyclist and a pedestrian were killed in a multi-vehicle crash that also caused a gas leak and knocked down a telephone pole in Fullerton on the morning of April 9.

The fatal crash occurred shortly before 9:20 a.m. at the intersection of South Magnolia Avenue and West Flower Avenue.

Fullerton police released a statement that a dark grey Audi sedan and a white Yamaha R6 motorcycle were traveling north on Magnolia from Orangethorpe at a high rate of speed when they struck a gold Toyota Sienna minivan that was turning eastbound onto Flower from Magnolia.

The motorcycle hit the rear passenger side of the minivan, and the rider was ejected from his motorcycle.

The Audi struck the front passenger side of the minivan. The force of the crash sent the Audi veering off the roadway, and striking both a bicyclist and a 70-year-old pedestrian on the Magnolia Avenue sidewalk. The Audi then struck a telephone pole and hit a fence and a home on Magnolia, causing a gas leak.

Tragically, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene while the 35-year-old motorcyclist was transported to a hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

According to police, residents near the crash were evacuated from surrounding homes because of the gas leak. Fullerton Fire shut down the gas and the residents were allowed to return home.

The home where the Audi landed – upside down in the front yard – belongs to the mother of Fullerton resident Luis Cisneros, 38, who arrived after the collision and alerted officers about the gas leak. His cousin, Oscar Vega, was in the home and getting ready to eat breakfast when he heard two vehicles racing down the street, followed by a crash.

Vega went outside to help the Audi driver exit the smashed-up car. “I was very surprised to see the man get out on his own and without major harm,” he said.

Cisneros, who lives down the street, said there have been three other collisions in the same area in recent years.

“There’s always racing outside the house, even though there’s a high school right across,” Cisneros said. “I’m surprised the city hasn’t done anything about it. I can always hear the cars revving.”

The 74-year-old driver of the Toyota Sienna and his 15-year-old passenger were transported to the hospital for minor injuries, police said. A bicyclist in his 30s was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. The 32-year-old driver of the Audi had a complaint of pain only, according to police.

Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. No one was cited, and the investigation is ongoing.
