Santa Ana Man Killed in I-5 Chain Reaction Crash

A 39-year-old Santa Ana man has been killed after he was hit by a vehicle during a chain-reaction crash on I-5 in Irvine, according to a news report.

The California Highway Patrol said that Juan Ticas was hit by a car while standing near his vehicle following the chain reaction crash, which began when Joshua Garmon of Trabuco Canyon swerved across several lanes in a Dodge Charger while traveling from the southbound I-5 to the 133 toll road.  Garmon drove in front of Ticas and then hit a guardrail, coming to rest across several lanes of traffic.

Ticas stopped and got out of his SUV to talk with Garmon.  Ticas then walked back to his SUV and was standing behind it making a phone call when a man driving a Nissan 240SX saw the Charger in the roadway and swerved to avoid hitting it, hitting Ticas instead.  Ticas fell over a guardrail, landing 50 feet below the roadway.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another man driving a Toyota Camry also crashed when he failed to avoid the Dodge Charger in the road.  He was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana with non-life-threatening injuries.

CHP officers interviewed Garmon and he was arrested on suspicion of DUI.  Authorities said this was Garmon’s second DUI offense.
