Study Finds Sex and Age Affects Recovery Time for Concussions

A new study has found that females and high school athletes need additional time to recover fully from concussion injuries, according to a news report.

Researchers at Michigan State University studied 222 young athletes who had suffered a concussion and found that the female athletes exhibited more symptoms than males and fared poorer on important memory tests.  High school age athletes also scored lower on memory tests than college age athletes, and took longer to improve from their injuries.

The research indicated that because younger brains are still developing, it may take longer for them to recover from a concussion.  Parents and coaches should be aware of these differences, and not rush young athletes back to the playing field.

Concussion injuries have risen significantly in the past decade.  In 2008, there were five concussions for every 10,000 high school athletes; a decade prior to that, there was only one concussion for every 10,000 high school athletes in the U.S.
