Tierra Santa Inc, a tour bus operator based in Van Nuys, California, runs regular bus routes from California to Mexico via Arizona. After six people were killed in a tour bus rollover accident in Arizona, the local press started digging into the company’s record.

The company reportedly has a long history of safety violations, cannot provide proof of federal insurance, and is not legally authorized to transport passengers in Arizona.  Federal regulators have confirmed that the company’s buses are not licensed to carry passengers across state lines. Nevertheless, the company has continued to operate despite warnings and citations from federal transportation inspectors.

One of the company’s buses was pulled over in Texas and cited for “lack of insurance and an interstate license, defective lights, defective emergency exits, inoperable lamps and other maintenance issues.” Drivers working for the company have also failed safety inspections and have been deemed an “imminent hazard to safety.”

Tierra Santa has refused to comment, except to tell reporters that the safety concerns were none of their business.
