The I-5 in Irvine, California was the scene of a horrible 10-vehicle crash near Alton Parkway early on the morning of Thursday, August 23.

The crash left a 24-year-old woman from Chula Vista dead and five adults and three children injured. The multi-vehicle collisions was caused by a a driver suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at around 1:30 a.m. to find that the initial crash was caused by the suspect’s Dodge Challenger and a Toyota Prius. The California Highway Patrol incident log states that the suspect’s vehicle was speeding and had it’s hazard lights on prior to hitting the Prius.

Among those injured in the crash were children aged 11, 10 and six months. The infant was traveling in the car driven by the woman who was killed. While all of the children and the five other adults who were injured were taken to the hospital, the CHP stated that they did not believe any had suffered potentially fatal injuries.

The DUI suspect is 22-year-old Irving Aguilar-Calixto of Nevada.

“He was transported to a hospital with complaints of pain, and he was evaluated by our officers and found to be DUI,” stated CHP spokesperson, Officer Florentino Olivera.
