A crash on Highway 91 in Orange County occurred at around 3 a.m. Sunday, January 20 when a driver was headed eastbound in the Westbound lanes near Gypsum Canyon.

California Highway Patrol said the vehicle headed in the wrong direction collided with an oncoming vehicle. Then at least two other crashes occurred in the traffic backup, resulting in a total of five vehicles involved.

Investigators said four people were taken to hospitals, with one in person said to be in critical condition. The conditions of the other victims are unknown at the time of this writing.

One person involved in one of the secondary crashes was reportedly arrested following the incident.

“The one that was arrested was after the fact. It was in the backup of the wrecked vehicles,” Sgt. Michael Stoney with California Highway Patrol said.

Oddly enough, this was the second accident on the 91 that morning that involved a driver going against traffic on the wrong side of the road on the 91 in Orange County. A fatality was also reported later that morning when a driver going the wrong way on the 91 slammed into a concrete center divider head on and burst into flames.
