An explosion that authorities believe was caused by dust and lint in a duct system at a La Habra chrome polishing plant has injured 11 workers, according to a news report.

Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the explosion at Gorilla’s Polishing, 531 Commercial Way, in La Habra, where approximately 30 workers were polishing wheel rims when the explosion occurred.  Eleven of the workers were injured, including two critically with burns over 90 percent of their bodies.  Victims were taken to the Orange County Burn Center at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana and UCI Medical Center in Orange for treatment.

A preliminary investigation indicates that lint and dust in a duct system is the likely cause of the explosion and fire.  Cal-OSHA is investigating the explosion.  According to Cal-OSHA records, the company was fined for seven violations in 2013 that included improper training and failing to monitor exposure to airborne contaminants.
