Four people were killed and at least 18 injured after a charter bus crashed into a sign pole on Highway 99 in Merced County, according to a news report.

The California Highway Patrol said that, according to a passenger, the bus driver was attempting to pass another vehicle on northbound Highway 99 just south of Livingston when the bus veered off the road and crashed into a pole that tore the bus in half. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene, including a married couple from Mexico, an Avalon, Calif., man and a man in his 30s from Mexico.

In addition, 18 people were injured, including the driver, 57-year-old Mario David Vasquez of Los Angeles. The charter bus was operated by Autobuses Coordinados USA.
