When the FCC oversaw the end of net neutrality rules in June they also took the extra step of making it specifically illegal for states to introduce their own net neutrality laws.
Some states have chosen to ignore the federal laws preventing states from implementing their own versions of net neutrality including Oregon, Vermont, Washington state and now more recently, California.
The new California net neutrality bill was signed into law this week and immediately resulted in a lawsuit from the Trump administration.
Regarding the California bill, Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, stated that California had “enacted an extreme and illegal state law attempting to frustrate federal policy.”
California Attorney General Xavier Becerra responded to the accusation saying that, “While the Trump Administration continues to ignore the millions of Americans who voiced strong support for net-neutrality rules, California—home to countless start-ups, tech giants and nearly 40 million consumers—will not allow a handful of power brokers to dictate sources for information or the speed at which websites load.”
