Apple Valley Man Dies in Construction Accident at Mission Viejo H.S.

A 23-year-old Apple Valley man has died after he was electrocuted in a construction accident at Mission Viejo High School, according to a news report.

Officials said that Daniel Pohl, an employee of Five Star Plastering of Laguna Hills, was working on a crew that was installing a large banner on a practice field at Mission Viejo H.S. when he was electrocuted by overhead wires.  Another employee was also injured when he tried to help Pohl.

Five Star Plastering is owned by Tom Blythe, who currently serves as vice president for the high school’s football program booster club.  School district officials said that the crew did not have permission to work on the high school practice field.

Booster club president Kevin Bland said that the club was told last year it could not hang a banner on a freeway sound wall that borders the field, and that one of the options considered was hanging the banner from scaffolding provided by Five Star.  Bland said a final decision was never made, and that the booster club was not aware the work was being done.
