A 12-year-old Carlsbad boy has been hospitalized with a head injury after he was hit by a plane towing a banner that crash landed on a Carlsbad beach, according to a news report.

The plane, owned by Air Ads Inc., was piloted by a 23-year-old man with more than 700 hours in the cockpit.  According to aviation expert Fred George, banner-towing planes have more stress put on their engines by the weight of the banners.  The pilot ditched the banner after the engine stopped in flight, then landed in the wet sand at Carlsbad State Beach.

Nicholas Baer was body-boarding on the beach with some of his friends and was struck by one of the airplane’s tires.  He sustained a head injury and was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital in serious condition.

The FAA is investigating the cause of the plane crash at Carlsbad State Beach.
