An Orange County golfer was struck in the head with a ball and sustained head injuries that resulted in his death. Sixty-nine -year-old Hiroshi Tango was golfing at the Los Serranos Country Club in Chino, California when he was hit in the back of the head by a golf ball. He was hit when he walked in front of his golfing partner at the ninth hole. The golfer who hit him was reportedly less than 10 yards away from Tango when he was struck.

Tango initially complained of head and neck pain after the incident and was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center. He suffered swelling of the brain and underwent two surgeries; he tragically succumbed to his injuries more than a week after the accident.

The potential lethal danger from golf ball injures has been known for at least a decade. CNN reported in 1999 that more than 300,000 people had suffered “serious” golf ball injuries “in the past few years” in the United States. Some of those accidents, like Mr. Tango’s, were fatal. Experts advise that if you are struck on the head with a golf ball, you should seek immediate medical attention. Head injuries may not be readily apparent, and retiring to the clubhouse for a few cocktails could be fatal when combined with a traumatic brain injury.

The latest incident has people asking once again whether golfers should wear helmets and what golf courses should do to improve safety.
