Three Killed in Single-Engine Airplane Crash in Upper Newport Bay

A Palos Verdes Estates real estate agent and two passengers were killed in the crash of their 1968 Beechcraft Musketeer as they were returning to California from a trip to Mexico.

Charles Alfred Chambers, 58, was believed to be piloting the plane that was headed to Torrance from Calexico, Mexico.  According to FAA records, he is a licensed pilot.  The plane was diverted to John Wayne Airport after the pilot reported fuel problems but crashed into Upper Newport Bay before it could land.

Also killed in the crash of the single-engine Beechcraft were Russell Urban, 63, of Palos Verdes Estates and Sean Kelley, 44, of Hermosa Beach.

According to news reports, Newport Beach firefighters and police responded to the crash and found the plane upside down in the water.  They tried to free the men before the plane was totally submerged, but all occupants of the plane were dead when rescuers reached them.

The FAA and the NTSB are investigating the crash.  The NTSB removed the plane by crane and will be inspecting it for mechanical malfunctions.
