In Santa Ana, California, a Newport Beach city police van crashed into two vans that had already been engaged in an early-morning head-on collision. Both drivers of the vans involved in the initial collision were critically injured and taken to the hospital, one of the drivers sustained life-threatening injuries. Four passengers from one van suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.

The initial accident occurred when a Mazda van crossed the centerline while traveling westbound on East 1^st Street, and hit a Chevy van head on. The Newport Beach police van then collided with the other two vans. The Santa Ana police were already on their way to the scene in response to the call from the first accident.

News accounts are unclear about which collision seriously injured the drivers, but it was presumably the initial head-on impact that sent two people to the hospital.

Ironically, the Newport Police officer who collided with the first collision was transporting a prisoner to the hospital. Neither the police officer nor the prisoner was injured in the accident.

Authorities are awaiting the results of toxicity tests to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a part in the accident.
