OC Safety Reminder: May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has declared May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and has asked motorists to be aware of the necessity to “Share the Road” safely with motorcyclists by:

  • Giving motorcycles a full lane
  • Always signaling before changing lanes or merging
  • Checking mirrors and blind spots frequently for motorcyclists
  • Allowing more following distance for motorcycles, which may have to react to even minor changes in road condition

California law requires that motorcyclists and their passengers wear helmets while operating a motorcycle.  In addition, motorcyclists are required to have headlights on at all times, and both passenger seats and footrests are required.

Motorcyclists can best protect themselves by wearing proper footwear, gloves and clothing that helps protect against injury, with reflective surfaces that help them be seen by motorists.
