UPDATE: Cesar Altamirano died Sunday morning due to the brain injury he sustained in the car accident.
Cesar Altamirano, a respected water polo coach at Tustin High and SOCAL Water Polo was hospitalized in Long Beach after a serious car accident, the SOCAL club confirmed late Thursday night to the OC Register.
Veteran SOCAL coach Ed Reynolds said Altamirano suffered a head injury from a car accident and has undergone surgery.
He described Altamirano as hard-working, kind and beloved.
“We’re keeping him in our prayers,” Reynolds said of Altamirano, who also coaches the 12-and-under boys with the powerhouse club program. “This is absolutely devastating.”
Altamirano teamed with co-coach Kyle Brawley last fall to lead Tustin – Altamirano’s alma mater – to its first CIF-SS boys water polo finals appearance since the Tillers’ championship season of 1983 in Division 3-A.
Tustin lost in the finals to Valley View 10-9 but Altamirano was selected CIF-SS Division 6 coach of the year.
