One person was killed and two were injured when a dump truck flew off the 57 Freeway and smashed into two Anaheim apartment buildings Tuesday, August 24.
According to police, the southbound dump truck exited at the Lincoln Avenue offramp at approximately12:40 p.m. when it struck a vehicle waiting at a red light. It then hit two other vehicles as it crossed the street, went through a small field and through the wall of an apartment complex’s parking area.
It continued into the back wall of an apartment where Rory Antoine was in his bed. Antoine was pushed along the truck’s grill out of his apartment and into another building. Tragically, 61-year-old Antoine, died as a result of his injuries.
Footage captured at the scene of the fatal truck crash showed a pile of rubble and debris in front of at least one apartment on Sunkist Avenue where an outer wall used to be. A dump truck with its wheels parked in the courtyard of the complex faced away from the unit as paramedics treated a man wearing a bright yellow vest.
The dump truck driver was taken to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries, and the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the series of collisions was also taken to a hospital to be examined after complaining of pain.
According to police, it’s currently unclear if the truck had any mechanical issues or whether the driver might have suffered some sort of emergency.
